Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
AptVet Laboratory helps clinics that detect a lot of HIV/AIDS patients with diagnostic services. It also helps clinics that treat homeless and troubled kids with health care.
The detection of gonorrhea infection is accomplished using culture or PCR. The last test is a multiplex PCR (Roche Amplicor) for Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, and an internal control. On a daily basis, testing is conducted.
Positive results for N. gonorrhoeae must be retested using a confirmatory PCR assay that detects the cryptic plasmid of N. gonorrhoeae in samples that were initially positive. Both tests are also performed on behalf of referring laboratories.
Overall, more than a quarter of all N. gonorrhoeae cases in Nigeria are found in this lab.
