Arbovirology

AptVet Arbovirus Laboratory conducts surveillance testing on mosquitoes, birds, and animals from all around the state, in addition to confirmatory clinical serology on human sera. This testing combines molecular, cellular, and immunological methods to get precise and complete data that can be used to make decisions about public health at the local and state levels.

Due to the dynamic interplay between infections, hosts, and the environment, arbovirus research is as vital to public health as monitoring. Current research focuses on determining how interactions between arboviruses and their mosquito vectors affect virus evolution and transmissibility. The lab is also looking at how temperature affects the fitness and spreadability of arboviruses in mosquitoes and how well new antiviral drugs stop the spread of arboviruses.
