Our Infectious Diseases Laboratory Expertise
The APtVet Infectious Diseases Laboratory provides advanced diagnostic testing and reference services, education, comprehensive outbreak analysis efforts, and externally funded basic and applied scientific research on diseases of public health significance. Our facility covers:
- Arbovirology: To perform surveillance testing on mosquitoes, birds, and mammals from throughout the state, in addition to confirmatory clinical serology on human sera.
- Biodefense: To perform testing on clinical and environmental samples for biothreat agents and is actively involved in the training of first responders and clinical laboratory professionals.
- Bloodborne Viruses: To concentrate on clinical and public health laboratory activities pertaining to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV)
- Cellular Immunology: To examine the function and/or phenotype of white blood cells (lymphocytes and leukocytes) comprising the immune system.
- Diagnostic Immunology: To conduct serologic tests to detect patient antibody responses to bacteria, parasites, and viruses.
- Microbiology—Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, and Virology Laboratories: To identify infectious agents of clinical and public health significance, provides laboratory support for outbreak investigations, and conducts applied research to improve methods for detecting and characterizing infectious agents.
- Laboratory Response Reference Services: To serve as a reference laboratory for a consortium of local, state, and federal public health, clinical, food testing, veterinary, and environmental testing laboratories whose purpose is to provide a coordinated and prompt response to biological and chemical terrorism, emerging infectious diseases, and other public health emergencies.
