Legionellosis

The most significant Legionella species for public health is Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1. (e.g., a contaminated cooling tower may cause multiple cases of infection).

In addition to the culture of respiratory materials, the detection of Legionella cell-wall antigen in urine can be used to diagnose L. pneumophila sg1 infection. This last test is now a standard part of the treatment for people with acute, community-acquired pneumonia.

Our laboratory tests specimens referred from Nigerian public and private hospitals on a daily basis. All positive results are immediately reported to allow for case follow-up and cluster identification.
